Producing Healthy Food and minimizing Carbon Footprint on the Planet- Nathaniel Ru and Sweet Greens

People are becoming increasingly aware of the quality of the food which they eat. This is the reason behind the explosion and expansion of green and organic foods. This is the challenge that three finance students from the George Town University were looking for when they realized that option was not available.

Nathaniel Ru, Nicolas Jammet, and Jonathan Neman decided that they would do something about the glaring gap that existed in the market. They came up with the idea of providing healthy foods for the community around them.

The first step was to get a business plan that would encourage investors to take an interest in their business. They were lucky to get some guidance from the woman who rented the space where they set up their first store.

She helped them look into the finer details that won the confidence of investors such as Steve Case and Danny Meyer. They took time and got a great architect, and their first salad bar design was good enough to invite quite a crowd of customers. The second challenge they had was getting the fresh and organic products they needed for their salad bar. They came up with the idea of approaching the local community and getting organically grown produce from them.

Their dream was to always have a supply of fresh and organic fruits and vegetables and to make sure that everything was recycled such that their food production process left as little of a carbon print on the planet as possible.

The next step in their plan was to find a way to market their salads to their customers. They created an application which could be used by their clients to order salads available on the menu. Currently, they make about 30 percent of their sales through the app. Read more: Nathaniel Ru | LinkedIn

They also came up with the idea of Sweetlife. Sweetlife organizes an annual concert where their enthusiasts meet and enjoy great music, and create a sense of shared culture.

The store which started as a single salad bar on campus has now spread to 40 locations across the country. The three co-founders state that it has taken time, effort and patience to get to where they are.
