The law is incredibly difficult to enforce within a prison. That may seem counter intuitive, but it is true. Prisons are their own little societies that come with a rigid set of social expectations. Prisoners who tell prison guards about potential crimes or criminal activities put themselves at risk for being a “rat.” On this end, law enforcement will find it impossible to gather intelligence about any criminal activity within a specific prison facility.
Law enforcement often turns to Securus Technologies for assistance in this matter. Securus is a telecommunications company that provides telephone and Internet services to prison facilities. It is an important role to play because every prisoner must use these telecommunications services to communicate to the outside world. Securus records every single phone call into and out of a prison before logging those recordings into a giant digital database.
With proprietary technology, Securus allows law enforcement to search the entire database for a particular voice. Every single phone call that individual has made into and out of a prison will pop up in search results. If law enforcement has a hot lead, they can listen to these phone calls in order to gain intelligence about criminal activity within a prison. The prisoners are unwittingly serving as their own “rats.”
But in order for this technology to work, contraband must be kept at a minimum within the prison. One of the hottest contraband items are cell phones. By having a cell phone in prison, a prisoner can bypass the recorded telephone calls provided by the telecommunications company. The prisoners can essentially sidestep being eavesdropped upon.
To combat the problem of contraband cell phones, Securus has developed a system called the Wireless Containment Solution. This proprietary innovation essentially jams all contraband cell phones within a prison. The cell phones will be prevented from connecting to a network to render them useless. But the technology takes it a step further.
The WCS can actually pull data from the contraband cell phone. This can tip off law enforcement to the particular network that supports the phone. Law enforcement can then use that information to find out who owns the account which would lead them in the direction of the owner of the cell phone.
With this new technological innovation, all prisoners must use the recorded telephone service provided by Securus. This essentially funnels all telecommunication information through one channel that can be closely watched by law enforcement.
